The Red Orchard Wall is a public commission located in Silver Spring, Maryland. It is a contemporary homage to an apple orchard that was once located on the site the sculpture now occupies, which is near the bustling downtown Silver Spring business district. I wanted to interpret the lacy nature of the view one would have looking up through the canopy of an orchard of apple trees and recall the circular shapes of apples. I also wanted the sculptures surroundings, the trees and buildings, to be visible through the negative space of the sculpture so that those surroundings would become part f the sculpture.
The sculpture is a serpentine, curved wall that tops out at approximately ten feet in height and nearly twelve feet in length.
