The Arc

About The Crucible

This is a 20” diameter bowl shape made of small, irregularly-cut aluminum fragments that have been cut, sanded, cold forged, and bolted together. The bolts used are small button head bolts with traditional nuts.

The shape came to me while looking at some wonderful ceramic artwork while feeling very ‘full’ and content. I had been kicking around the idea of a bowl shape for some time as the aesthetic of increasingly irregular or chaotic components had been waxing in my mind. The shapes and personalities that surrounded me while viewing the aforementioned clay works helped to conjure the image of this ‘bowl’, which appeared as clear as the sun before my eyes. I love it when I can reach out and almost touch something that does not yet exist. The name for it, THE CRUCIBLE, came to me along with the image.
