Early Bastion is an interpretation of Aluminum Bastion, which was the first of the Bastion sculptures. These Bastion pieces are in essence mountain landscapes or studies, where contour and flow of form, shadow, the relationship between negative and positive space and simple outlines are of paramount importance to the sculpture. I work with that vocabulary to make the sculpture a somewhat kinetic object despite its obvious static nature; this is because the large amount of negative space within the form interacts with shadow, color and light to cause the sculpture to change as one moves around the piece. I feel these pieces can appear to move while remaining still.
This tension between the static and kinetic is at the heart of many of my sculptures. The Bastions series is perhaps where it dances within the metal medium most.
