About Sapphire Pirouette

The Sapphire Pirouette is inspired by my Umbra series of sculptures, which are explorations of fluid motion, shadow, and the use of not only negative space to bring the surroundings into the body of a sculpture, but also doing so by making the sculpture transparent. In some ways the holes hinder the ability of the sculpture to transmit its surroundings, depending upon the angle it is viewed from.

The Sapphire Pirouette employs a blue tinted acrylic to add its visual energy. The holes serve to accentuate the color as they serve as color-sinks, appearing more tinted then the rest of the sculpture.

My sculptures are created to meld with their surrounding, primarily through the use of negative space. Transparency is another way to ignite a sculpture by what surrounds it.
