About Orchis

Orchis was inspired by my Obscura series of spiraling sculptures, but is more influenced by organic, vegetal forms then geographic forms. Its name comes from its floral look. While in the mountains, and in particular in alpine elevations, I typically move though a bonanza of high altitude flowers. Their forms and colors are awesome and inspiring. While it is often the large land forms and scapes that I tend to take back into the studio with me as inspiration, the flowers I spent time with in the Rocky Mountains in the summer of 2018 led directly to the creation of this sculpture. In addition to the sculpture, I created hand-pulled relief prints of the three aluminum components of this sculpture while each was still flat.
