About zz-Burst

BURST is a wall-hung sculpture which I created to suggest the Art-Deco designs of that era in American design. It is a very simple sculpture when compared to my body of work, and its creation came pretty naturally. I cut trapezoidal strips of aluminum and brass and arranged them upon each other on the floor of my studio in a bursting, sun-ray pattern. I rearranged the pieces in different ways until I found the design pleasing. Then, I bolted them together. Of course, there was a bit more to it than that, but that was generally what I did.

To be honest, I was feeling sort of low at the time and was trying to envision the idea of hope or joy while making it. I actually toyed with the idea of calling it ‘Hope’; however, I thought that was a bit corny and also did not want it to seem like a Barack Obama-related sculpture, as the 2009 presidential election was in full swing and everyone and their pet was trying to cash in on Obamamania.

This very architectural piece can be hung in any way. There is no top or bottom.
