Heartwood Path is a companion piece to me sculpture Sapele Passage. Both a wood sculptures that explore void, or absence juxtaposed with solidity as positive space. I see the negative space in this sculpture as not only physically opening the solid wood to the word and to experience, but I also see it this space as a place of travel, be it visual, emotional or physical.
To the physical end, I will be honest and share that I see these piece as depicting a passageway, where one might choose to travel the solid passage in the middle of the sculpture, and hope to not be draw to or fall into the holes that surround you. Of course this piece in not monumental and one can not walk through or upon it, but what happens visually and emotionally to the viewer is what most concerns me.
