Orchis was inspired by my Obscura series of spiraling sculptures, but is more influenced by organic, vegetal forms then geographic forms. Its name comes from is fairly floral look. While in the mountains, and in particular alpine areas, I am typically moving though a bonanza of high altitude flowerless. Their forms and colors and quite awesome and inspiring. While in the past it is the large land forms that I tend to take back into the studio with me as inspiration, the flowers I spent time with in the Rocky Mountains in the summer of 2018 led directly to the creation of this sculpture. In addition to the sculpture, I create a hand-pulled relief print of the three aluminum components of this sculpture while each was still flat. I will be sharing images of that print and others in 2019.
